Who can access free contraception?

  • A female or person with a uterus
  • Aged between 17-35
  • Living in Republic of Ireland 

What information do you need to provide to access the free contraception scheme?

  • Name and address 
  • PPS number
  • Date of birth

WHAT COSTS ARE COVERED BY THE FREE CONTRACEPTION SCHEME?

The following costs are covered by the scheme:

Consultation

Contraception consultation
The cost of your consultation with your GP or doctor to talk about your contraception options.

Prescription

Prescription for contraception given to you by your doctor
These will be given to you free-of-charge by any participating pharmacy.

LARC

The cost of fitting and removal of long-acting reversable contraception (LARCs)
including implants, IUDs and IUSs (coils).

Appointments

Any follow-up appointments relating to the implant or coil.

WHERE CAN I ORGANISE A CONSULTATION FOR FREE CONTRACEPTION?

You can access the free contraception scheme through your GP if they have signed up to the scheme. Alternatively, if you do not have a GP or your GP is not signed up to the scheme you can access it from some Family Planning Clinics.

You can access a number of different forms of contraception under the free contraception scheme. It is important that you organise a visit with your GP or doctor to discuss all the options and decide which one suit your needs best.
